Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has launched five modern fibreglass fishing boats, a state-of-the-art patrol vessel, and two upgraded landing sites in a landmark move to transform Lake Victoria’s Blue Economy.

Speaking during the commissioning at Kichinjio Beach, Governor Nyong’o described the occasion as “a watershed moment,” signalling a new era for the county’s fishing industry.
“Today, we are not merely launching boats and opening landing sites. We are launching a new vision,” he declared. “This is a celebration of progress, partnership, and a safer, more prosperous future on Lake Victoria.”
The five fibreglass boats, each with a capacity of 1,500 kilograms, are expected to more than double potential incomes for fisherfolk while enhancing safety during expeditions.
“These boats are engineered for stability and durability, directly addressing the tragic loss of life on the lake,” said Nyong’o. “This is not just an upgrade; it is an economic revolution.”
To ensure sustainability and security, the county also commissioned a patrol boat that will enforce fishing regulations and respond to emergencies. The effort complements the national government’s KES 3 billion investment in a Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre based in Kisumu.

The procurement was done in partnership with Kenya Shipyards Limited through the Kisumu Lakefront Development Corporation. Governor Nyong’o praised the deal as a model for future public projects, noting, “This is Kenyan expertise building Kenyan capacity.”
He called on financial institutions to support fisherfolk with affordable financing and urged the national government to zero-rate taxes on fibreglass boat-building materials.
Looking ahead, Nyong’o directed Kisumu’s Fisheries Directorate to showcase both the traditional wooden canoe and a new fibreglass boat at the upcoming Devolution Conference in Homa Bay, symbolizing the county’s transition.
“Let the entire nation see the journey we are on,” he said, adding that the full potential of Kisumu’s Blue Economy exceeds KES 70 billion annually.
The event was attended by senior county officials, representatives from Kenya Shipyards Limited, local MCAs, financial institutions, and members of Beach Management Units from across Kisumu.
