The Nyanza Young Professionals movement has strongly defended their recent meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, dismissing criticism from sections of the political class.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu, the group, which comprises young professionals from across the Nyanza region, insisted that their visit to Gachagua two weeks ago was in good faith and meant to discuss national issues, particularly youth empowerment.
“Our meeting was purely for consultation on socio-economic and political engagement of young people in this country,” said Peter Odhiambo, the group’s chairperson.
Political Backlash and Intimidation
Odhiambo expressed concern over the reaction from some Nyanza politicians, claiming they have faced verbal attacks and even threats since the meeting.
“It is unfortunate that some leaders in the region have resorted to intimidation. As young people, we have a constitutional right to associate with any leader,” he asserted.
The group also vowed to continue engaging leaders from different regions, emphasizing their role in advocating for youth interests.
Criticism of Government Policies
The young professionals condemned the recent scrapping of free meals for Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) personnel, calling it a demoralizing move that undermines the country’s security forces.
Additionally, they reminded President William Ruto of his promise to implement the Kazi Mtaani youth employment program by January 2025, questioning whether he still has a concrete plan for job creation in the region.
“What does President Ruto have in store for the youth in Nyanza as he prepares to visit this week for the Nyanza Investment Conference?” Odhiambo asked.
Calls for Electoral Participation and Economic Relief
Vincent Owira, the movement’s Secretary-General, emphasized that the group operates independently and is not aligned with any political figure. He urged the government to stop intimidating young people, particularly through abductions, warning that the same youth will be crucial in the 2027 elections.
“Instead of abducting young people, the government should focus on creating employment opportunities,” Owira said.
He also criticized the government’s high taxation policies, calling them excessive and burdensome on struggling Kenyans.

The group further encouraged youth across the country to register as voters ahead of the 2027 elections and urged the government to lower the cost of acquiring national identity cards.
Support for Raila Odinga’s AUC Bid
In a show of solidarity, the young professionals wished Azimio leader Raila Odinga success in his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, ahead of the upcoming elections.
As political tensions rise, the Nyanza Young Professionals remain steadfast in their call for youth inclusion in national decision-making and economic empowerment.
