The government has been urged to deploy technical and scientific solutions to combat the recurring flood menace in Nyakach Sub-County and its surrounding areas.

Speaking on Sunday at Nyong’ong’a Sub-location in West Nyakach Ward, 2027 Nyakach parliamentary hopeful Polycap Agweng’i Mburo called on authorities to adopt successful flood mitigation strategies implemented in Budalangi and Mwea to protect lives and property.
“With the onset of the March-April long rains, more people are likely to be displaced if immediate measures are not initiated,” Mburo warned.
He raised concerns over the swelling waters of Lake Victoria, cautioning that roads, homes, and farmlands could soon be swept away. According to Mburo, the government’s flood control program in Budalangi, which included dykes and drainage systems, significantly reduced flood devastation in the region.
“The Budalangi and Mwea flood programs have minimized destruction. We appeal to the government to replicate these measures in Nyakach before it is too late,” he urged.

Mburo, who distributed food and essential supplies to over 1,000 flood-affected families in Nyong’ong’a, advised residents in high-risk zones to seek safer ground as mitigation efforts take shape.
“In the past, floods have displaced thousands, destroyed livelihoods, and left many without food or shelter. We cannot afford another crisis of such magnitude,” he emphasized.

As part of his personal flood control initiatives, Mburo has constructed culverts and opened water canals in Lower Nyakach to enhance drainage during the ongoing rains.
“This is a difficult time for our constituency, but it has also revealed the resilience of our people. With the right leadership and support, we can find lasting solutions,” he stated.
The Nyakach flood crisis, much like the situation in the Nyando Basin, underscores the urgent need for the government to act swiftly and implement long-term flood mitigation measures.
