A large number of Sango residents in West Nyakach turned out for a free medical camp organized by Kisumu County Woman Representative Ruth Odinga’s office, in partnership with local organizations. The camp provided essential healthcare to locals dealing with diseases linked to the persistent overflow of Lake Victoria.

Local resident Water Ouko praised the camp, emphasizing its timeliness.
“This area has faced many challenges. The floods have introduced various illnesses,” Ouko said, noting that Sango often misses out on such initiatives, which typically end in nearby Pap Onditi.
Despite his gratitude, Ouko noted the need for more time to accommodate the high turnout, urging Odinga to extend future camps to three days. He also emphasized a need for targeted treatment for children, particularly for bilharzia.

Lower Kadianga Sub Location Chief Regan Otieno expressed his appreciation, acknowledging Odinga’s responsiveness to the community’s needs. “I want to sincerely thank Hon. Odinga for this gesture. Many politicians only show up when they need votes,” Otieno remarked. He highlighted the camp’s impact, including sessions on financial literacy and combating “sex for fish” practices prevalent in lake basin communities.

Speaking on Odinga’s behalf, Samson Olweru, manager in her office, underscored her commitment to addressing local health concerns and empowering women in the fishing sector.
Madam Ruth is concerned about our women and children. The camp is part of her larger goal to support women in the fishing industry,” he said.
Olweru announced that Odinga’s office would soon equip Sango’s Beach Management Units (BMUs) with a boat to bolster women fisherfolk’s livelihoods and independence in the community.
