The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned Kenyans against relying on unauthorized weather reports, warning that fake updates pose serious risks at a time when the country faces unpredictable rainfall, floods, and prolonged droughts.

Speaking in Kisumu during the International Day for Universal Access to Information, Senior Meteorologist Chris Mutahi stressed that the department remains the only official source of weather and climate information.

“Kenya Meteorological Department is the only authentic source of meteorological and climatological information. Keep off other sources that might jeopardize accuracy. We take responsibility and accountability over the information consumed,” Mutahi said.

He underscored the dangers of misinformation, particularly in a climate crisis where farmers, travelers, businesses, and communities depend heavily on reliable forecasts.

Mutahi revealed that the department is investing in digital platforms to provide real-time weather updates in simple and accessible language.

“This being a digital age, the department is working to ensure information reaches you instantly and in plain language that can be understood by everyone,” he added.

The meteorologist also urged media houses to partner with the department to safeguard the accuracy of forecasts. He called for specialized training for journalists and editors in interpreting weather data and coding, noting that misleading broadcasts could put lives and livelihoods at risk.

“We should collaborate with the Media Council of Kenya to ensure every newsroom has at least one expert in the production section to interpret the information we provide,” he said.

His remarks come as Kenya grapples with the harsh realities of climate change, heightening the need for timely, accurate, and accountable weather information for public safety and economic stability.
