Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has lauded the transformative potential of early childhood education as he inaugurated the Canon Nyong’o Model ECDE Center, named in honor of his late father, Canon Hesborn Nyong’o, on Friday.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at Ratta village in Seme sub county, Governor Nyong’o recalled the emotional journey that led to the establishment of the ultra-modern facility.

“My late father, who deeply valued education, would be thrilled to witness this milestone. This model ECDE Center is a testament to his passion for nurturing young minds,” he said.

The state-of-the-art center, built in partnership with Play Action International, features cutting-edge infrastructure and incorporates play-based pedagogy, a methodology aimed at fostering holistic development in young learners.

Governor Nyong’o praised Play Action International CEO Maurielle Maupoint for the organization’s commitment to early education. “This project is a remarkable achievement made possible by the dedication of Play Action International and our development partners,” he said, adding that Kisumu’s 653 ECDE centers, serving over 44,500 pupils, will benefit from enhanced resources and teacher training under the partnership.

The Governor highlighted a broader 10-year collaboration with Play Action International, which includes constructing additional model centers, playgrounds, teacher training, and community engagement programs. The initiative is designed to elevate early childhood education standards across Kisumu County.

During his address, Nyong’o also criticized a recent proposal by Controller of Budget Dr. Margaret Nyakang’o to halt county bursary programs, labeling it a “time bomb.”

“County bursaries are vital in ensuring no child is left behind in accessing education. In Kisumu, these funds have enabled thousands of children from poor families to stay in school. This support cannot be discontinued,” he asserted.

The Governor extended gratitude to various organizations, including UNICEF, World Vision, and KMET, for their contributions to ECDE development, emphasizing the critical role of partnerships in driving educational progress.

As Kisumu positions itself as a hub for exemplary early education, the Canon Nyong’o Model ECDE Center stands as a beacon of innovation and hope for future generations.
