In just five months, Engineer Erick Ouko has accomplished what many elected leaders struggle to achieve in years. Hailing from Ombeyi Ward in Muhoroni Sub-County, Ouko has emerged as a transformative figure, spearheading critical infrastructure projects and humanitarian initiatives without holding public office.

As a philanthropist, Ouko believes that community development should not solely depend on government intervention. He argues that private individuals can contribute significantly while awaiting government action. His motivation stems from the perennial flooding of River Nyando, which has displaced residents, destroyed farms, and triggered hunger crises.
Fighting Floods and Rehabilitating Infrastructure
One of Ouko’s major initiatives includes the desiltation of River Abwao, a crucial move to mitigate flooding in Wagai and Madiaba, areas frequently affected by rising waters. Additionally, he has taken on road rehabilitation projects, improving key transport routes such as Ombeyi Market Inner Ring Road, Koinange Street, Kore-Ka-Ray Road, and Kambudha-Masara Road—roads that have been neglected for years and become impassable during heavy rains.
“Engineer Ouko has done what others have failed to do. This road was a nightmare, but he stepped in. If he runs for office, we will support him,” said Mama Mary Auma, a resident of Kasiru Kolal Village.

Health, Water, and Education Support
Ouko has also made strides in improving public health and water accessibility. He recently constructed two modern latrines at Onyalo Biro Market and Rutek Center, as well as installed culverts leading to Yao Dispensary Hospital. Additionally, he rehabilitated boreholes at Bacho Primary School and Wagai, ensuring a steady water supply for students and the community.

Recognizing the hardships faced by students, Ouko introduced a lunch program in all 21 schools in Ombeyi Ward—19 public and two private—allocating at least Ksh 105,000 to support the initiative.

A Champion for Sports and Community Empowerment
A staunch supporter of youth empowerment, Ouko organized the annual Ombeyi Ward Football Tournament, where all 23 football clubs in the area received uniforms, while the winners walked away with cash prizes and trophies. The event also attracted professional scouts seeking emerging talent.

Beyond sports, he has played a crucial role in uplifting women and youth groups, financially empowering them to start businesses. Local boda boda groups, including Marega and Amani, have benefited from his support. Additionally, he has funded church fundraisers and provided housing for widows and vulnerable families.
Political Aspirations?
A loyal member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Ouko remains a vocal supporter of Raila Odinga’s political agenda. He has urged Ombeyi residents to rally behind ODM and participate actively in shaping Kenya’s political future.

With his track record of community-driven initiatives, many are now asking: Is Engineer Erick Ouko a godsend for Ombeyi Ward? And could political office be his next step?
