Eight Students Arrested in Deadly Kenyan School Dorm Fire

Kenyan police have arrested eight students on suspicion of arson after a devastating fire ripped through a girls’ school dormitory, killing at least 16 pupils and injuring dozens more.

The blaze broke out in the early hours of Thursday morning at the Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, about 120km northwest of Nairobi. The fire tore through the upper floor of a dormitory that housed 135 bunk beds.

Safety Breaches Exposed

Education Minister Julius Ogamba announced that preliminary investigations revealed multiple safety breaches at the school, including overcrowding in dormitories and a locked exit door. “In particular, there was congestion in the dormitory and one exit door was locked, contrary to the prescribed safety requirements,” he said.

The minister has since dissolved the school’s board of management and ordered action against the headteacher, warning that disciplinary and legal steps would be taken against anyone found to have failed in their duties.

Parents Left in Limbo

As investigators worked through the night and into Friday morning, anxious parents gathered at the school, many in tears, waiting for news of their children. Some of the injured were transferred to Nairobi for specialized medical care, while others have been treated and discharged.

The bodies of those who died have been taken to the nearby mortuary for preservation and DNA identification. Police said the eight students were detained for questioning after being traced to their homes and brought back to the school, while others who had remained in the area were also tracked down and detained.

A Tragic Pattern

Kenya has a long and tragic history of school fires. Just two years ago, at least 21 people died in a dormitory fire in central Kenya. Many fires in boarding schools have been blamed on arson by disgruntled pupils angry about discipline and living conditions, while others have been caused by accident.

Overcrowding in dormitories and failure to follow safety guidelines, such as keeping exits clear and windows unlocked, have frequently been cited as factors contributing to the high number of casualties.
