A somber cloud hangs over Bwanda village in Anyuro Sub-location, Kanyagwal Location, after a 17-year-old high school student tragically ended her life on Thursday afternoon.

Purity Amanda(now the late)

Purity Amanda, a Form Three student at Sigoti Girls Complex, was discovered hanging from the roof of her family’s kitchen in a suspected suicide. The incident has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, where Amanda was widely known as a cheerful and humble girl.

According to family members, Amanda had shown no signs of distress earlier in the day. She reportedly woke up as usual, completed her household chores, and later sent her younger brother, David, to the local posho mill. Upon his return, David called out to Amanda repeatedly, but received no response. A search around the homestead ended in horror when he found his sister’s lifeless body suspended inside the kitchen.

“I thought we could save her,” said a distraught villager who helped cut her down in a desperate attempt to revive her. Unfortunately, Amanda had already succumbed.

The deceased, who was orphaned at an early age, had been under the care of her aunt, Linet Ogwethe. Speaking through tears, Ogwethe expressed deep shock over the tragedy, saying Amanda had shown no indication of emotional struggle.

“She was always laughing and loved by many. I don’t understand what happened,” Ogwethe said.

Assistant Chief Charles Ochieng Anduru confirmed the incident and stated that the matter was reported to Ahero Police Station. Officers have since launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the suicide. Amanda’s body was taken to Othoo Mortuary in Nyando Sub-County, where a postmortem is expected to be conducted.

As the community grapples with the loss, the tragedy raises urgent concerns about the mental health of students, especially during school holidays. Education stakeholders are being urged to address the mounting pressure on learners, particularly those in the final years of the 8-4-4 education system.

“Parents and guardians must be vigilant during the holidays. These children are carrying more than just books,” remarked a local teacher, calling for increased awareness around adolescent mental health.

Amanda’s passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the silent battles many young people face. Her death is not just a personal loss—it’s a community wake-up call.
