Women parliamentarians from Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, and Migori counties have called for urgent and collective action to address the “triple threat” facing women in Nyanza: new HIV infections, teenage pregnancies, and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

Speaking during the 2024 edition of Sigand Nyinam at Migori County Stadium on Friday, December 6,2024, the leaders emphasized that eliminating these challenges requires collaboration from government agencies, communities, and civil society organizations.

The initiative aims to eradicate the triple threat by 2027 through a holistic and inclusive approach.

Migori County Women Representative Fatuma Mohammed underscored the role of inclusive education in combating the threats.

“As we fight to end this menace, we must educate the girl child and not forget the boy child, as that will ensure equal economic empowerment,” said Mohammed.

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo echoed her sentiments, urging women in the region to stand together against these challenges.

Sigand Nyinam celebrates the women of the Lake as we fight against the triple effect of early marriage, HIV/AIDS, and gender-based violence. Still, I rise. Still, we rise,” she declared.

Kisumu West MP Rosah Akinyi Buyu highlighted the significance of the event, which was attended by prominent figures such as Ida Odinga, wife of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, and Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga.

“The number of young, confident, passionate girls and women who turned up for the event and even won awards gave me hope for a brighter future. Their innovative ideas and energy will bring transformative change to our communities,” Buyu remarked.

The parliamentarians collectively urged for a multi-stakeholder approach to end the cycle of vulnerabilities affecting women and girls in the region.

The Sigand Nyinam initiative, which celebrates the resilience and contributions of women in Nyanza, will move to Siaya County in 2025 for its next edition.
