The Tourism Fund has intensified its capacity-building programs to enhance the hospitality sector in Western Kenya, targeting industry professionals in counties such as Siaya, Vihiga, Kakamega, Homa Bay, and Kisumu. The initiative, which focuses on service excellence, customer satisfaction, and professional growth, is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the region’s tourism potential.

Speaking at Joventure Hotel in Kondele, Kisumu, Tourism Fund Board of Trustees Chairman, Mr. Samson Some, underscored the importance of continuous learning for hospitality workers.
“We believe that capacity-building initiatives are key to unlocking the full potential of the tourism sector in Western Kenya. By investing in local talent, we are fostering a stronger, more resilient industry that will drive sustainable economic growth,” said Some.
The training programs aim to professionalize the sector by equipping participants with skills aligned with international standards. To date, 406 individuals have undergone training, with plans to expand the program across all 47 counties, according to TF Training Programs Manager, Enoch Chebii.
Kisumu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Tourism, Farida Salim, applauded the initiative, emphasizing the economic benefits of enhanced service delivery. “Better customer satisfaction translates to higher earnings in the tourism sector. This training is a step in the right direction for our regional growth,” she said.

Local stakeholders, including Robinson Anyal of the Lake Victoria Tourism Association, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the positive impact the training has already had on improving service delivery in the region. The program also seeks to address a critical gap: many workers in the hospitality industry lack certification, while managers require periodic refresher courses.
The Tourism Fund’s capacity-building initiative comes amid a rebound in Kenya’s tourism sector, bolstered by political stability and the rollout of a new strategic plan to guide the fund’s operations. The initiative aims to double sector revenues by equipping workers with the expertise needed to attract more visitors and deliver world-class experiences.

Board of Trustees members Joseph Sar and Dorcas Mbalanya, along with Kisumu County Director of Tourism Ivenette Adhiambo, were also in attendance at the Kisumu training session.
This concerted effort to enhance skills and professionalism is expected to position Western Kenya as a premier tourism destination, boosting regional and national economic growth.
