The leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has called on members who left the party to return and help rebuild a strong and united political outfit following the passing of its founding leader, Raila Amolo Odinga.

Speaking during a massive ODM gathering attended by thousands of supporters at Kirembe in Kisumu on Sunday, ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga urged members to remain united and resist politicians seeking to sow division within the party.

Oburu said he was prepared to relinquish his leadership position if party members believed he was contributing to disunity, emphasizing that the unity of the Luo community remains critical to ODM’s political strength and bargaining power.

“I want the Luo nation to remain united and not allow anyone to divide us. I did not appoint myself party leader. If I am the one causing division among our people, then I am ready to leave my position,” said Oburu.

The meeting saw leaders from across the region deliver a common message of unity, calling on former members and allies who had drifted away from the party to return and strengthen ODM ahead of future political contests.

Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o warned against internal divisions, saying unity was essential for the party’s survival and success.

“People who are divided will fall, but when they are united, there is strength,” Nyong’o said.

The governor also urged party members to remain sober and focused on ODM’s founding ideals, noting that the party was established to champion democracy, equity, social justice and the protection of the Constitution.

“ODM was not born to be permanently in government or in opposition. It was founded to fight for democracy, fairness and constitutionalism,” he added.

The leaders also hinted at the possibility of ODM working together with President William Ruto’s UDA party in the 2027 General Election, signaling a potential political realignment that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the polls.

The renewed calls for unity come at a time when ODM is seeking to consolidate its support base and chart a new course following the departure of several key figures and shifting political alliances across the country.
