A 19-year-old boda boda operator from Homa Bay County has died by suicide after allegedly failing to raise money to clear his wife’s maternity bill following the successful delivery of twins at a local hospital.

The deceased, identified as David Ochieng, hailed from Kawadee Village in Kang’utu West Location, Rachuonyo East Sub-county. Reports indicate that Ochieng had taken his wife to Rachuonyo East Level 4 Hospital for delivery but was unable to settle the medical bill afterward.

According to sources, Ochieng sought financial assistance from his father to secure the discharge of his wife and the newborn twins, but his plea was reportedly denied.

His wife is said to have delivered the twins successfully, but remained stranded at the facility due to financial constraints.

Joseph Ndege Onyango, the area chief, confirmed the incident, saying Ochieng’s body was discovered on Saturday morning, May 23, hanging from a tree behind his father’s home after he allegedly lost hope.

The body was later moved to Jawabu Hospital Morgue, awaiting an autopsy as investigations into the incident continue.
