Kisumu County is witnessing a major road infrastructure push, with several multimillion-shilling projects either under construction, awaiting implementation, or nearing completion, according to progress updates issued by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration under Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.
The projects, spread across different constituencies, are expected to improve connectivity, ease traffic congestion and strengthen access to key economic centres within the county.
Among the projects are the Maseno–Kombewa–Kalandini Road (D245) and Maseno Town Roads, which have an estimated cost of Sh1.73 billion.
The 30.5-kilometre project is currently 67.7% complete and ongoing, putting it among the more advanced road projects in the county.
Another major project is the dualling of the Kisumu Boys Roundabout–Mamboleo Junction section of the A1 Road, which has consumed Sh1.31 billion.
The 4.7-kilometre project is 98% complete, bringing it close to completion and potentially easing traffic movement along one of Kisumu City’s major corridors.
The Ministry also listed the Mamboleo Junction–Miwani section of the Kisumu–Chemelil–Muhoroni–Kipsitet Road, Lot One, as ongoing.
The 12.9-kilometre project has an estimated cost of Sh5.19 billion and is currently 20.2% complete.
The second lot, covering the Miwani–Chemelil section, is being reconstructed at a cost of Sh4.96 billion.
The 43.4-kilometre project is currently 34% complete, according to the progress update.
The third lot, covering the Chemelil–Muhoroni–Kipsitet section, is also under reconstruction.
The project, estimated at Sh5.72 billion, covers approximately 44.5 kilometres and stands at 28% completion.
Meanwhile, work on the Ahero and Kericho interchanges is nearing completion.
The project involves completion of the Ahero Interchange at the A1/B1 junction and the Kericho Interchange at the B1/C23 junction. It has an estimated cost of Sh1.39 billion, with the two interchanges reported to be 95.3% and 95.2% complete, respectively.
Other projects remain at earlier stages of implementation.
The Koru Town–Junction C35 and access to Koru Bible College Road has an estimated cost of Sh892.6 million and stands at 11.47%, with its status listed as pending.
The Holo–Lela Road, estimated at Sh920 million and covering about 12 kilometres, has already had its contract awarded.
Similarly, the Chiga–Rabuor Road, with an estimated cost of Sh1.10 billion, has had its contract awarded.
The progress figures point to a mixed implementation picture, with some major road projects approaching completion while others are still in their early stages or awaiting commencement.
If completed as planned, the projects could significantly improve road connectivity between Kisumu, Maseno, Muhoroni, Chemelil, Miwani, Koru and surrounding areas, while supporting movement of people and goods across the county.
The latest update also highlights the scale of public investment being channelled into Kisumu’s road network, with several individual projects each running into billions of shillings.
