Kondele MCA Joachim Oketch Swagga has called on President William Ruto to urgently rein in his allies, warning that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is being treated as a junior partner despite its role in the broad-based political arrangement.

Speaking to members of the press in Kisumu on Friday, April 17, Swagga said the party was increasingly being perceived as a lesser partner, a situation he termed unacceptable. He noted that ODM had temporarily suspended talks on forming a coalition ahead of next year’s General Election, citing concerns over respect and equity within the arrangement.

“ODM is an equal partner, but there is a lot of disrespect. We are being perceived as a lesser partner. We should be respected because we are going to form the government together. President, rein in your lieutenants. Let us talk and negotiate with honour,” said Swagga.

The county legislator also condemned the recent attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, urging security agencies to act swiftly and bring those responsible to justice. He criticised what he described as a blame game between political leaders and the government over rising incidents of violence.

Swagga warned that increasing cases of politically instigated violence and destruction of property risk undermining democracy and investor confidence, particularly in Kisumu.

“I have seen the government blaming politicians and politicians blaming the government. I blame both because they are all responsible for the rise of goonism. Youth unemployment remains a major challenge, and some young people are being weaponised by politicians. They should not allow themselves to be used to destroy businesses or disrupt peace,” he said.

He emphasised that Kenya is governed by the rule of law and called for the arrest of all individuals involved in the attack on the senator.

Turning to local political activities, Swagga welcomed the planned Linda Wananchi rally in Kisumu, urging tolerance and restraint among rival factions. He appealed to supporters aligned to the Linda Ground faction, with which he is associated, to avoid interfering with the event.

“Let them hold their rally peacefully. There is no reason to fight or hire goons to disrupt meetings. We must allow democratic space for everyone,” he added.
