President William Ruto has entertained mourners in Kabuchai, Bungoma County, with his lighthearted remarks about the popular song “Kasongo” and biblical tax collector Zacchaeus, known as Sakayo in Swahili. He used the references to defend his administration’s development record while addressing criticism from online detractors.

Speaking at the funeral of Maayi Ann Nanyama, the mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Westlands MP Timothy Wanyonyi on January 3, Ruto dismissed his critics as people who focus on negativity rather than progress.
“There are people on social media who don’t want us to talk about development or Kenya’s progress. They spread rumors, saying there is no work happening—just stories like Kasongo and Sakayo,” Ruto said. “But Kasongo is a good song that’s trending, so let’s continue with it. Sakayo, too, isn’t bad because he collected taxes. And as a government, we’re collecting taxes to build the nation. Remember, Sakayo was visited by Jesus. If you’re not Sakayo, how will God visit you?”

Ruto emphasized unity and collaboration, urging Kenyans to shun divisive politics and work together for the nation’s success. He criticized leaders, including his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua, for promoting ethnic divisions and hatred.
“It’s important to work together. That’s why we’ve agreed there’s no need for factions or divisions,” he said. “Some people are angry because Kenyans are united and working together. They resort to spreading ethnic hatred and unnecessary discord. Let’s focus on cooperation—if Kenya succeeds, we all succeed.”
The president’s remarks come amid mounting criticism on social media over issues such as rampant abductions and perceived governance failures. Critics have used these incidents to push for his resignation.
Ruto also offered condolences to the Wetang’ula and Wanyonyi family, praying for strength during their time of loss.
“May God grant the family and friends strength to bear the loss of Maayi Ann Nanyama, the lovely mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Westlands MP Timothy Wanyonyi,” he said.

The event brought together top leaders, underlining its significance in fostering unity amidst Kenya’s current political climate.
