Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has taken a monumental step toward reshaping Western Kenya’s energy landscape by issuing 45 title deeds to families in the Gogo community, Uriri Constituency, Migori County, on December 20, 2024.

This landmark event paves the way for the long-anticipated upgrade of the Gogo Hydropower Plant, boosting its capacity from 2MW to 8.6MW and ushering in a new era of energy reliability and community-driven development.
KenGen Chairman Alfred Agoi Masadia hailed the milestone as more than an infrastructure project, describing it as a pivotal moment in the integration of sustainable energy solutions with local economic growth.
“We are not just upgrading a power plant; we are building a future where energy projects improve lives, empower communities, and drive Kenya’s development agenda,” Masadia remarked.
Managing Director and CEO Eng. Peter Njenga echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the project’s dual benefits of energy security and socio-economic advancement.
“This is more than a legal transaction. It is a step toward economic empowerment and long-term security for these families,” Njenga said. “The Gogo redevelopment project will stabilize the Western region’s grid, deliver clean energy, and enhance infrastructure and livelihoods.”
Transformative Vision for Gogo Hydropower
Commissioned in 1958, the Gogo Hydropower Plant has long been a cornerstone of energy provision in the region. Its modernization will include raising the dam level, desilting the reservoir, and installing state-of-the-art turbines and transformers.
“This upgrade is not just about increasing energy output,” Njenga explained. “It’s about reducing power outages, cutting transmission losses, and decreasing reliance on thermal energy in Western Kenya.”

The €38.8 million redevelopment, funded by a €35 million loan and a €3.1 million grant from KfW, along with KenGen’s €679,245 contribution, will also feature the construction of a 26-kilometer transmission line to Awendo Substation. Construction is slated to begin by September 2025.
A Model for Community-Centered Development
KenGen’s engagement with the Gogo community extends beyond energy infrastructure. Through job creation, infrastructure improvements, and investments in healthcare, education, and water access, the project reflects a holistic, community-centric approach.
“The Gogo community has been an exemplary partner,” Njenga noted. “These title deeds symbolize our shared journey and commitment to inclusive development.”

Local leaders, including Migori Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayako and Uriri MP Mark Nyamita, praised the initiative for aligning with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and bringing transformative opportunities to the region.
“This project is a beacon of hope,” Nyamita stated. “By securing title deeds and initiating redevelopment, KenGen has laid the foundation for generational transformation.”
A Sustainable Future
Upon completion, the revamped Gogo Hydropower Plant will generate 32 gigawatt-hours annually, bolstering energy reliability, cutting outages, and supporting Kenya’s green energy goals.
“As we modernize the Gogo Hydropower Plant, we count on the community’s continued support to achieve a shared vision of growth and prosperity,” Masadia concluded.

KenGen’s commitment to sustainable energy and community empowerment ensures a brighter, more prosperous future for the Gogo community and beyond, setting a benchmark for inclusive energy development in Kenya.
