Kenya’s football fans will have to wait longer for the thrilling Mashemeji Derby between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, as venue complications have forced an indefinite postponement of the iconic clash.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Leagues and Competitions Committee announced the decision, citing the unavailability of a suitable stadium to host the high-stakes encounter. Both Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani—Kenya’s primary football venues—are undergoing renovations in preparation for the 2025 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya is co-hosting with Uganda and Tanzania.

AFC Leopards confirmed the postponement in a statement:

“We regret to inform you that the much-anticipated FKF Premier League match, AFC Leopards SC vs. Gor Mahia FC—#MashemejiDerby, earlier scheduled for Sunday, November 24, 2024, has been postponed to a later date. This is due to the unavailability of the match venue, which is undergoing renovations in preparation for the upcoming CHAN competition. We shall communicate the rescheduled date in due course.”

Efforts to relocate the match proved futile. The Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu was considered but ultimately rejected by Leopards, citing Gor Mahia’s dominant fan presence in the region. Other options, including Dandora Stadium, Police Sacco Stadium, and Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, were deemed unsuitable due to security concerns and the derby’s massive following.

This postponement highlights Kenya’s longstanding stadium infrastructure challenges, leaving clubs scrambling for alternatives. The lack of world-class facilities is not just an inconvenience but a glaring issue that threatens the stability of the ongoing 2024/25 season.

Teams Under Pressure

The delay adds to the struggles of both teams, each grappling with internal challenges. Gor Mahia is reeling from a poor run of form, leading to the departure of head coach Leo Neiva. Recent matches, including a 2-2 draw with Murang’a Seal and a 2-0 loss to Bandari FC, have left fans demanding better performances.

On the other side, AFC Leopards barely escaped defeat in their last fixture, drawing 1-1 with Mara Sugar courtesy of a last-gasp header by Sydney Lokale. Under pressure, coach Thomas Trucha remains optimistic about turning around the club’s fortunes.

Fan Patience Tested

With no rescheduled date announced, fans are left in limbo, awaiting the return of the derby that unites and divides in equal measure. The postponement not only tests the patience of supporters but also underscores the urgency for Kenya to address its stadium shortcomings.

As the clock ticks, both teams must regroup, strategize, and prepare to reignite one of Africa’s most celebrated football rivalries whenever the derby eventually takes center stage.
