The proposal to extend Kenya’s presidential term limits from five to seven years is fueling intense debate across the political divide as the 2027 General Election approaches. A section of UDA National Youth officials is firmly against the extension, calling for the original five-year term to be upheld.

UDA National Youth Leader David Kibor, addressing the press in Kisumu en route to Nairobi, emphasized the need for regular leadership changes to uphold democratic principles and accountability.

If we have good leaders doing their job well, they will be re-elected. Extending terms for those who aren’t contributing would be disappointing. Let’s allow them to finish and create space for new leaders who will work for the common good of the people,” Kibor asserted.

The UDA youth argued that extending the term could undermine democratic principles, warning of potential power consolidation and stressing the importance of maintaining checks and balances.

“Our stance reflects a broader concern about protecting democracy and preventing power entrenchment,” Kibor noted.

Supporters of the extension, like Migori youth leader Bonface Orwa, argue that longer terms would provide stability and allow leaders more time to complete development projects before the country returns to election mode. Orwa stated:

“I support extending the term limit for the president and governors, as it will lead to stable leadership and allow sufficient time for development initiatives.”

The proposal, introduced by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, has divided opinion within the political landscape. Majority Leader in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah and other leaders have voiced concerns over potential abuse of power, while UDA youth officials emphasize the need to protect term limits for the sake of political accountability and democratic integrity.
