The Government of Kenya has officially kicked off the construction of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to expand transport infrastructure and strengthen regional trade.

Construction of the multi-billion-shilling railway project officially commenced on July 1, 2026, with Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga saying the line will transform Western Kenya into a key transport and economic hub.
Speaking to the media on Thursday at the Kisumu Main SGR Station, Mainga said the project will significantly enhance transport connectivity, improve freight and passenger movement, and unlock economic opportunities across Western Kenya and the wider East African region.
“This transformative infrastructure project marks a significant milestone in strengthening transport connectivity, enhancing regional trade and unlocking economic opportunities across Western Kenya and the wider East African region,” said Mainga.
He noted that once completed, the railway will stimulate industrial growth, ease the movement of goods and passengers, and accelerate socio-economic development along the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba corridor.
“The project is expected to significantly improve freight and passenger movement, stimulate industrial growth, and accelerate socio-economic development along the corridor,” he added.

Mainga revealed that recruitment of workers has already begun, assuring residents that locals will be given priority during the hiring process.
He further disclosed that the Kisumu SGR station will be developed into a mega transport hub occupying approximately 100 acres, positioning the lakeside city as a strategic gateway for regional trade.
The Kenya Railways boss appealed to local authorities and residents to safeguard contractors and project equipment throughout the construction period, noting that most construction materials will be sourced locally to stimulate the local economy.
According to Mainga, the railway project is expected to create thousands of employment opportunities, expand business activities, and inject income into households across Kisumu and neighbouring counties.
“This is a transformative investment that will put money into the pockets of our citizens through jobs, business opportunities and economic growth,” he said.
Mainga also issued a stern warning against land fraudsters and encroachers attempting to exploit the project.
He cautioned members of the public against individuals masquerading as officials from the National Land Commission or surveyors, saying some fraudsters are falsely claiming to represent landowners in an attempt to con unsuspecting residents and investors.
He urged the public to verify all land-related transactions through the relevant government agencies.
Kisumu County Commissioner Ramadhan Mwabudzo and Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o hailed President William Ruto for initiating the railway extension, saying the project will restore Kisumu’s historical role as a regional transport and trade hub.
The two leaders said the SGR will strengthen Kenya’s connectivity with neighbouring countries, particularly Uganda, while reviving the region’s historical significance in East Africa’s railway network.
They expressed confidence that the project will spur investment, enhance cross-border trade, and position Kisumu as a key logistics and commercial centre in the East African region.
