The African Talent University (TATU) has received a major boost after the government granted it official recognition to operate as a university and offer degree programmes.

In a statement seen by The Kenyan Tabloid on Monday, April 20, 2026, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba signed a document confirming the institution’s new status as an accredited centre of higher learning.

The approval was formalised during a ceremony held at Jogoo House B offices, where the ministry issued TATU with a Letter of Interim Authority. The certification allows the institution to admit and train students and award academic qualifications as it works towards attaining full accreditation.

The government said the move is part of its broader strategy to expand access to higher education by creating more training opportunities and increasing funding support for institutions across the country.

The event was attended by senior education officials, including Principal Secretary for Higher Education Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, representatives from the Commission for University Education, and TATU leadership.

“The Government is committed to expanding access to higher education by increasing opportunities for education and training, in addition to providing funding,” said Ogamba.

“The Letter of Interim Authority now enables the institution to train and award qualifications while it works towards securing full accreditation,” he added.

TATU founder Prof Humphrey Oborah described the milestone as the culmination of a two-decade struggle marked by resistance, misunderstanding, and persistent opposition.

“Today, that idea has finally been recognised. In a historic milestone for education in Africa, the Government of Kenya, through the Commission for University Education, has officially accredited The African Talent University, marking the birth of the continent’s first university dedicated to talent-based learning,” he said.

TATU is located in Buoye, along the Nairobi highway in Kisumu.
