As the legendary Safari Rally returns to Kenya’s rugged terrain, Vivo Energy Kenya, the official distributor of Shell-branded fuels and lubricants, has announced a groundbreaking sponsorship for five elite rally crews ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 WRC Safari Rally.

This historic sponsorship cements Shell’s long-standing commitment to motorsport and local talent development, reinforcing Kenya’s status on the global rallying map.

Among the beneficiaries of this deal are Pauline Sheghu, Linet Ayuko, Caroline Gatimu, Tinashe Gatimu, Rajveer Thethy, Shabaz Anwar, Isa Amwari, Denis Mwenda, and Timothy Kinoti, all of whom will rely on Shell’s high-performance fuel to power their machines through Kenya’s unforgiving rally stages.

Women in Motorsport Make History

Headlining the Shell-backed lineup is Pauline Sheghu, who will make history as the first female driver to compete in the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) alongside her navigator Linet Ayuko. Their entry marks a major milestone in championing gender diversity in motorsport.

“We are honored to represent Shell in this prestigious event,” Sheghu said. “This sponsorship not only provides us with world-class fuel performance but also instills confidence as we tackle some of the toughest rally terrains. We are here to compete at the highest level and inspire the next generation of female racers.”

Adding to the excitement is the mother-daughter duo of Caroline and Tinashe Gatimu, showcasing the deep-rooted family passion for rallying in Kenya.

Strengthening Safari Rally’s Legacy

Speaking during the sponsorship announcement, Mark Senteu, Commercial Manager at Vivo Energy Kenya, emphasized the crucial role of fuel technology in elite rally performance.

“At Shell, we deliver fuels that maximize engine efficiency and power, ensuring our rally crews have the reliability needed to conquer the Safari Rally’s extreme conditions,” Senteu stated. “These drivers embody the resilience, skill, and passion that define both this rally and our brand.”

Recognized as one of the world’s toughest motorsport challenges, the WRC Safari Rally is not only a premier sporting event but also a significant economic driver and source of national pride.

“The Safari Rally draws global attention, boosts tourism, and energizes local businesses,” Senteu added. “By supporting these teams, we are investing in the future of Kenyan motorsport and uplifting the communities that make this event possible.”

Elevating the Fan Experience

Beyond team sponsorships, Shell has partnered with JCB Ganatra to enhance the iconic Kasarani Super Special Stage, ensuring an electrifying experience for fans and drivers alike.

According to JCB Ganatra CEO, Altaf Ganatra, new technical elements have been introduced to the stage, heightening the challenge for competitors while delivering greater thrills for spectators.

“The Kasarani Super Special Stage is a fan-favorite, bringing rally action closer to Nairobi,” Ganatra said. “With Shell’s backing, we have refined the course, adding new features that will push drivers and their machines to the limit.”

Dubbed the world’s most unpredictable rally, the WRC Safari Rally is infamous for its punishing conditions—blistering heat, sudden downpours, deep mud pits, and the treacherous “fesh-fesh” dust that wreaks havoc on engines.

“Surviving the Safari Rally demands skill, endurance, and the best technical support,” noted navigator Linet Ayuko. “Having Shell’s high-performance fuel in our corner gives us the edge needed to compete against the best.”

As anticipation builds for the 2025 edition, the WRC Safari Rally Kenya is set to deliver another unforgettable chapter in motorsport history. With Shell’s superior fuel powering their charge, Kenya’s rising stars are ready to leave an indelible mark on one of the world’s most prestigious rally events.
