An eight-year-old pupil at Arina Primary School in Kisumu died on Thursday afternoon after sustaining a severe head injury in a playground accident.

According to police reports, Pauline Akinyi, a Grade Two South pupil, was playing on an iron six-seater merry-go-round with classmates around 3:45 p.m. when she accidentally fell. The rotating seats struck her on the head, leaving her with a serious injury.

Teachers Dorca Momanyi and Paul Okumu rushed to her aid and immediately took her to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts to save her life, Akinyi succumbed to her injuries at about 4:10 p.m. while undergoing treatment.

The incident was reported by the school’s head teacher, Mrs. Millicent Obara, to Kisumu Central Police. The body was later moved to the hospital’s mortuary.
