Police in Ahero, Nyando Sub-County, have intercepted a major drug haul, seizing 17 sacks of marijuana with an estimated street value of KSh 10,888,500. The drugs were discovered at Maembeni Estate on Friday after a tip-off from a member of the public.

Nyando Deputy County Commissioner Elijah Maranga confirmed that the police, led by Ahero OCS Naomi Owuor, swiftly acted on the intelligence and tracked the suspect to her residence. Upon arriving, they impounded the sacks of marijuana, which were of various sizes.
“We received credible information about a person involved in the illegal trade of marijuana in Maembeni Estate. Acting on this tip, our officers went to the location and managed to seize 17 bags of marijuana worth KSh 10,888,500,” Maranga said.

Maranga issued a strong warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade and other illegal activities in Nyando. He emphasized that the authorities will not tolerate such criminal behavior, particularly when it endangers the lives of the youth.
“We will not condone this illegal business that is destroying the lives of our children. The police have done an excellent job, and we commend them for their efforts. We are going to intensify the search for those involved in this trade,” he said.
The Deputy County Commissioner also acknowledged the support from the local community, who have been sharing vital information with law enforcement. However, he urged those still withholding information to cooperate with the police to maintain peace and security in Nyando.

Joshua Ayub, the newly appointed Nyando Sub-County Police Commander, praised the community’s cooperation and vowed to continue cracking down on illegal activities. Ayub, who is also a clergy, expressed his personal commitment to protecting the youth from destructive substances.
“Since my arrival, the residents have been actively informing us about criminal activities in the area. Today’s breakthrough is a result of their cooperation. However, as the DCC said, we will not tolerate these illegal activities anymore. As a police officer and a man of God, I will ensure that our children’s future is not ruined by drugs or illicit brews,” Ayub stated.

The suspect, identified as Rosemary Atieno Sungu, was arrested and is currently in custody at Ahero Police Station. She is expected to be arraigned in Nyando Law Court on Monday.
