After months of wrangling and divisions, elders from Nyakach Sub-county have unanimously endorsed Mzee George Arogo Yugi as the new Chairman of the Nyakach Council of Elders, bringing to an end a protracted leadership dispute.

The endorsement followed a lengthy meeting in Kisumu, which nullified an earlier controversial installation of Stephen Obura Bodo as chairman. In a gesture of reconciliation, Obura, who attended the meeting, pledged his full support for Arogo.

“It’s the will of the elders, and I will rally behind the new office,” Obura said.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Arogo confirmed his official installation is scheduled for Friday in Nyakach, to be presided over by Luo Council of Elders Chairman Odungi Randa. The ceremony is expected to draw prominent local leaders and dignitaries.

Arogo described the endorsement as the dawn of a new era of unity and reconciliation.
“My duty is to unite our people. It’s only through unity that Nyakach can realize meaningful development,” he said.

He further assured that the elders will remain neutral ahead of the next general elections.
“All aspirants are our people. We will offer counsel without taking sides,” he affirmed.

Several elders present hailed the consensus as historic. Rabala Ogendo urged Nyakach residents to rally behind the new leadership, while Christine Akeyo termed the development a “new chapter” for the community. Peter Omulo added, “What the elders have decided is final. Let no one go against it.”

Friday’s installation is expected to mark a turning point for the community, ushering in unity, peace, and collective progress.

Mzee Arogo takes over from the late Peter Ombee, who died in 2024 while in office.
