Kenya is in mourning following the death of Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo, a towering figure in the country’s political and public service history. Dr. Asiyo passed away on Thursday in North Carolina, United States, at the age of 93.

The family of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga has expressed profound sorrow over her passing, remembering her as a fearless reformist, a pioneering leader, and a woman of numerous groundbreaking achievements.
In a joint tribute, ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga and Mama Ida Odinga celebrated Dr. Asiyo’s monumental legacy, describing her as “a teacher, a reformer, and a trailblazer whose life cleared the path for generations of women in leadership.”
“Phoebe was not only a transformative educator but also a daring woman who transitioned from the classroom to a leadership role in the Kenya Prisons Service, and later, into the male-dominated world of electoral politics where she triumphed over formidable opponents,” said the Odingas.
Dr. Asiyo’s distinguished career began in education before she made history as the first woman to serve as Senior Superintendent of Prisons. She went on to become one of the first women elected to Parliament, marking a defining moment in Kenya’s political landscape.
Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o also paid tribute to the late icon, saying he and his wife, Dorothy, were “shocked and heartbroken” by the news.
“Mama Phoebe was a constant source of inspiration and a trusted advisor. Her immense contributions to Kenya’s politics and development are etched into our nation’s history,” said Nyong’o.
Dr. Asiyo’s legacy of justice, gender equality, and democratic ideals earned her both national and international recognition. Throughout her life, she remained a symbol of courage, resilience, and unyielding service to her country.
Messages of condolence continue to pour in from across the political divide and civil society, all underscoring the indelible mark she leaves behind.
She is survived by her children, including Caesar Asiyo, and a towering legacy that will be remembered for generations. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
