Newly appointed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has attributed the current traffic snarl-ups on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway to the reckless behavior of Kenyan drivers, urging them to take responsibility as they rush to celebrate Christmas. He called for careful driving as the holiday season approaches, warning that the situation could worsen if caution isn’t exercised.

Murkomen also reassured Kenyans that their safety is a top priority this festive season, thanking the public for maintaining peace so far. Following discussions with the security team covering the border areas between Kericho and Kisumu, he reported that insecurity cases had significantly dropped, with only a few recent isolated incidents remaining.
“We are making greater strides as a country in bringing communities together,” Murkomen stated. He emphasized that the government’s first priority is the safety of Kenyans during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, adding that no effort would be spared to ensure security.
“I want to assure Kenyans that their safety is guaranteed. Our security team is working around the clock to ensure that people are safe throughout the festive season,” he said.

Speaking in Kipkelion Constituency at the border of Kisumu and Kericho counties during his sister’s wedding on December 21, Murkomen highlighted the efforts of his ministry and the Ministry of Transport to ensure the safety of road users and prevent traffic congestion, which has been particularly problematic on major highways. He noted that both ministries are working tirelessly to ensure smooth travel for Kenyans during the holidays.
Murkomen urged the public to celebrate responsibly and within the law. He also praised President William Ruto’s administration for fostering peace and social cohesion among communities.

Accompanying Murkomen was Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, who called on Kenyans to pray for the unity of the nation and to support the newly appointed cabinet members. Ichung’wah also expressed concern about the behavior of Generation Z, blaming both the church and parents for failing to instill discipline in the youth, which has led to disrespect towards leaders and online insults.
As the holiday season approaches, the government continues its efforts to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for all Kenyans.
