At least 19 people have been killed and 26 others seriously injured in a devastating road crash involving a school bus at Coptic roundabout along the Kisumu–Kakamega highway on Friday evening.

According to eye witnesses, the bus was ferrying mourners from a funeral in Nyahera to Nyakach when the driver reportedly lost control at the notorious blackspot, causing the vehicle to overturn and land in a ditch.
“The driver was speeding and when he reached the roundabout, the bus just rolled several times,” said one witness at the scene. The injured were rushed to Kisumu County Referral Hospital, where several remain in critical condition.
The tragedy has sparked outrage among Kisumu residents, who accuse the government of neglecting the dangerously designed roundabout, which they say has claimed dozens of lives over the years.
“This is murder by poor design. We are going to dig out this roundabout with our bare hands if we must,” said Hesborn Ongany, a furious resident from Kondele, while speaking to journalists at the crash site.
Locals are now demanding immediate government intervention to redesign the roundabout and enhance safety measures on the busy highway, warning that continued silence from authorities will only cost more lives.
