Traders in Kisumu are celebrating what they describe as a transformative leap for commerce in the lakeside city following the official merger of the Uhuru Business Complex and Kibuye Wholesale Traders.

Speaking on Friday, James Ombima, Chairman of the Uhuru Business Market Complex, described the union as a “groundbreaking collaboration” set to redefine the city’s economic landscape.

“This landmark collaboration marks a significant step toward fostering economic synergy, enhancing market vibrancy, and promoting sustainable commercial growth in Kisumu,” said Ombima.

The merger brings together Kibuye’s entrenched wholesale networks with the modern infrastructure of Uhuru Market, including spacious grounds, proper sanitation, and cleaner, more accessible trading areas. The result, Ombima noted, will be a dynamic, inclusive, and competitive marketplace that serves both traders and consumers.

According to Ombima, the Uhuru Business Complex will extend full support to incoming traders from Kibuye, ensuring access to essential facilities and resources for a seamless transition. He expressed confidence that the move will lead to increased trade volumes, improved goods accessibility, and fresh economic opportunities for businesses across the board.

The development has been met with enthusiasm by Kibuye traders, many of whom have long contended with poor trading conditions. Betreace Wamalwa, a wholesale trader from Kibuye, commended the county government for spearheading the initiative.

“I’m happy to be given a space at Uhuru Business Market. It’s clean and free of mud unlike Kibuye, which becomes inaccessible during the rains. We’re thankful to the county governor and City Manager Abala Wanga,” she said.

Kibuye Wholesale Traders are expected to begin full operations at their new Uhuru Business Market location on Monday, May 26, with logistical preparations for transporting goods already underway.

This strategic consolidation is part of Kisumu County’s broader push to modernize its commercial infrastructure, reduce congestion in legacy markets, and elevate the city’s profile as a regional trade hub in western Kenya.

The move signals a renewed commitment to sustainable urban commerce, hygiene standards, and inclusive economic development , a promising shift that traders and officials alike believe will pay dividends for years to come.
