A devastating road accident early this morning at Kibuon, Nyakach, claimed the lives of three students from Ober Junior Secondary School in Rachuonyo East Sub County and a matatu conductor. The students were on their way home for the Easter holidays when tragedy struck.

The fatal collision occurred along the Oyugis-Kisumu Highway when a Kisumu-bound public service vehicle (PSV) operated by Bestline Sacco crashed into a lorry transporting sugarcane. The impact killed the three students and the conductor instantly.

Nyakach OCPD Lauranius Odinga confirmed the deaths and reported that three other students and six additional passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical. They were rushed to Nyabondo Mission Hospital for emergency treatment. Police arrived at the scene, removing the wreckage to Katito Police Station as investigations commenced.

Elsewhere, in another tragic incident, five students from Mbita Boys High School were struck by a speeding private car in Mbita Town near the ICIPE fence. Two of them have reportedly died, while the others were rushed to Homa Bay County Level 5 Hospital. Witnesses claim the driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident.

With road carnage on the rise in Luo Nyanza, urgent calls are being made for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater accountability from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
