A growing wave of frustration among youths from the Nyanza region is pushing for a shift in political dynamics, with calls for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to ensure their direct inclusion in government. Many young supporters of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) feel sidelined despite their unwavering loyalty and hard work during elections.

This sentiment emerged from a recent research study conducted following a closed-door meeting at Kisumu City Hall between Odinga and youth representatives from the region. The study outlined key demands that both the government of President William Ruto and Raila Odinga must address to secure the youth vote in upcoming elections.

Among the top demands is a call for strategic development projects in the region and the appointment of more youthful leaders from the lakeside to key government positions, including Principal Secretaries (PS) and heads of parastatals.

“Youths also deserve key positions. We have sacrificed for the party and the country for years. It’s time our efforts are recognized,” some youth representatives told The Kenyan Tabloid on Saturday.

One of the most prominent names floated for appointment is Gabriel Oguda, who was previously shortlisted for a PS position. According to supporters, Oguda is well-read, knowledgeable, and easily accessible to the youth—even online.

“If we are given PS positions, that would mean one more term for President William Ruto,” some young leaders remarked. “That guy from Mount Kenya gave us nothing. Gabriel Oguda, you deserve the position—that’s where we start.”

During the Kisumu meeting, Raila Odinga assured the youth that they would not be forgotten when it comes to government appointments. Additionally, international observers conducting separate research found that President Ruto’s administration could strengthen its hold on the region by bringing youthful faces into government.

Odinga remains a key political figure following his unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. His next move is being closely watched—not just by his political allies and opponents, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, but also by the younger generation eager to shape the future of Kenya’s leadership.
