Over 1,000 residents of Kibos in Kisumu County have benefited from free dental and medical services in a three-day medical camp organized by Kibos Sugar and Allied Company.

Held at Boma Farm in Kibos, the initiative is part of the company’s long-term Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. Neighboring communities in Nandi County also received support from the program, which aimed to address the pressing healthcare challenges in the region.
Joyce Opondo, the Corporate Affairs Relations Officer at Kibos Sugar, highlighted the importance of the camp.
“Many residents face difficulties accessing healthcare, particularly for dental issues like cavities, which are prevalent among middle-aged individuals. This initiative is our way of giving back to the community,” said Opondo.

The camp was made possible through partnerships with Smile Star UK, the Chatthe Group, the Management and Information Centre, and local health personnel from the Kisumu County Government. In addition to providing dental treatments, the initiative offered education, awareness, and free medicine distribution.
A variety of cases, including dental, nutritional, and other communicable and non-communicable diseases, were addressed during the camp. Severe cases were referred to larger health facilities, with the Chatthe Group pledging financial support for follow-ups.

Former Kisumu County Assembly Majority Leader Samuel Ong’ou lauded the organizers of the camp, emphasizing its critical importance to the residents of Kisumu. He urged the organization to continue extending its medical services and called upon the Kisumu County Government to support or replicate such initiatives to enhance healthcare delivery for its citizens.
Opondo revealed that, it was not the first time they are conducting such massive exercise for the community, saying it won’t be the last time.
“This is not the first time we’ve conducted such a massive exercise for the community, and it won’t be the last,” Opondo assured.
The outreach program underscores the commitment of Kibos Sugar to improving community health and supporting underserved populations in the region.

Dear Editor
I have been working as a medic at the camp and would like it noted that the number of patients treated has been over stated.
The volunteer medical team from Smilestar together with a team of volunteers from BATUK have worked incredibly hard this week. And provided free medical and dental care to approximately 1,000 people.
Local young people have been translating for us, which has been invaluable for our work
We have received very kind hospitality from our hosts and are grateful for this
