Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, has sharply criticized Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, accusing him of incompetence and demanding his resignation.

In a fiery video shared on his social media platforms, Owino lashed out at Kanja, urging him to take immediate action to end the ongoing wave of abductions allegedly targeting critics of President William Ruto’s administration.

“As the person responsible for national security, Kanja must stop these abductions, or Kenyans will take matters into their own hands,” Owino declared. He added, “We will not plead with the president to stop abducting people. Kenyans know what to do, and we must deal with these so-called criminal gangs.”

Owino also reminded Kenyans of their power, referencing the nationwide protests that delayed the signing of the controversial Finance Bill 2024 into law.

Echoes of Concern from Fellow Lawmakers

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo joined Owino in condemning Kanja’s leadership, accusing him of failing to address the alarming trend of disappearances.

“The Inspector General has claimed that police are not involved in these abductions. However, that does not absolve the government or the police from responsibility,” Odhiambo said. “The police are mandated to protect citizens, and when rogue elements take over, it signals a failure of duty.”

She further stressed that Kenya is not a lawless state, warning that the growing abductions tarnish the country’s reputation both nationally and internationally.

“While some individuals may push the limits of freedom of expression, there are lawful ways to address such issues. Abductions are unacceptable and must stop immediately,” Odhiambo added, calling on Kanja to take decisive action.

The escalating criticism against Kanja underscores the increasing tension over national security, with Kenyans and lawmakers demanding accountability and swift resolution to the spate of abductions.
