The Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay County is undergoing a significant transformation as part of a government initiative to boost regional connectivity and drive economic growth.

Principal Secretary for Interior, Dr. Raymond Omollo, announced that the project is on track to be completed ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in October. Homa Bay County is set to host the national event for the first time at the Raila Odinga Stadium, a milestone for the region.

The PS, tasked with coordinating national projects, outlined the key upgrades at the airstrip. These include extending the runway by 100 meters on both ends and constructing 45-meter turning loops to improve aircraft maneuverability. Additionally, the existing tarmac will be fully replaced with a modern, durable surface that meets international aviation standards.

“Once completed, the airstrip will provide a modern and efficient mode of transportation for our people and guests visiting the county,” said Dr. Omollo.

Beyond enhancing mobility, the project is expected to create jobs during and after construction, offering long-term economic benefits. Dr. Omollo emphasized that the upgraded airstrip will strengthen Kenya’s aviation network, contributing to the nation’s vision of becoming a regional hub for trade and tourism.

This development aligns with President William Ruto’s directive made early last year when he announced that Homa Bay County would host the Mashujaa Day celebrations, sparking a wave of infrastructure upgrades in the region.

The Mashujaa Day event will be held at the Raila Odinga Stadium, which can accommodate up to 5,000 people in its main pavilion. This will mark the first time Homa Bay County hosts a national celebration, joining Kisumu and Kisii as the only counties in the Nyanza region to have held such events under the government’s rotational celebration policy.

The upgrades at Kabunde Airstrip are a key part of this historic moment, expected to leave a lasting legacy for the county and its people.
