As technological advancements pose growing risks worldwide, Fablab Winam has positioned itself as a beacon of hope, equipping young Kenyans with critical digital skills to combat these emerging challenges. The institution offers free training in data analytics, cybersecurity, and visualization, ensuring that youths are prepared for the ever-evolving job market.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony on Friday, Fablab Winam CEO Martin Oloo underscored the organization’s commitment to bridging the skills gap in Kenya’s digital economy. The program, which attracted 1,847 applicants, successfully trained 63 young professionals, achieving a remarkable 100% completion rate. Impressively, 44 graduates have already secured employment or industry placements.
“Fablab is an innovation hub supporting young innovators and professionals transitioning into the job market. Today, we celebrate the culmination of three months of rigorous training through the Kiep-Skies Bootcamp, focusing on cybersecurity and data analytics,” Oloo stated. “We are proud to see all our trainees graduate, with some already securing positions in top companies, including Kenya Airways.”

Addressing Cybersecurity and Data Threats
Oloo highlighted the increasing risks of cyber threats and data security breaches, stressing the urgent need for skilled professionals in every business sector.
“Hacking and data security threats are escalating. Every company and organization requires experts in cybersecurity and data analytics to safeguard their operations. The demand for these skills is skyrocketing, and our graduates are well-equipped to meet the market’s needs,” he explained.
He also noted that 50% of the program’s graduates hail from Kisumu, with the remaining half coming from Mombasa, Nairobi, and other regions, reflecting the national reach of Fablab Winam’s programs.
Government and Industry Leaders Applaud Initiative
Kisumu County Executive Committee Member for Education, Technical Training, and Innovation, John Awiti, praised the partnership between Fablab Winam and the county government, pledging enhanced collaboration and awareness campaigns.
“As a county, we oversee youth programs, and when a partner like Fablab steps in to provide practical skills, we fully support the initiative. We will ensure greater awareness about Fablab’s opportunities and facilitate partnerships with our vocational training centers. Their state-of-the-art facilities are unmatched, making them an ideal training ground for our TVET students,” Awiti affirmed.

Philip Maitha, Program Coordinator of Kiep-Skies, echoed these sentiments on behalf of the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Industry. He highlighted the national government’s investment in youth employment and innovation through initiatives like the Kiep-Skies Bootcamp.
“This partnership between the national and county governments is a strategic move to equip young professionals with job-ready skills. This training is not just about employment but also entrepreneurship, enabling participants to create their own opportunities in the tech industry,” Maitha stated.
Graduates Share Transformative Experiences
For Mercy Bodo, a graduate from Kisumu, the program was a turning point in her career.
“This training has been a game-changer. I came from a communications background with no prior tech experience. With increasing concerns about AI replacing jobs, I sought to gain a competitive edge. Cybersecurity opened my eyes to the reality of digital threats, and I now feel confident in tackling these challenges,” Bodo shared.
She emphasized the program’s hands-on approach and internship opportunities, which have already led many graduates to secure jobs.

Fablab Winam’s Vision for the Future
Andrew Lamb, Chairman of Fablab Winam’s Board, reaffirmed the institution’s long-term vision of shaping Kenya’s tech industry.
“Technology will define our future, and if we don’t take control, it will control us. Our mission is to empower young people with the knowledge and skills to lead in innovation. Kenya is already a leader in Africa’s tech space, and we aim to keep pushing boundaries by training top-tier professionals,” Lamb remarked.
As Fablab Winam continues to expand its impact, this graduation marks another milestone in its journey to equip young Kenyans with the tools to thrive in a rapidly digitizing world.
