Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has forcefully defended himself against a wave of online criticism after referring to Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua as “dad” during a live call-in segment on Kameme FM on Friday.

The lawmaker said his remarks were rooted in cultural respect rather than political allegiance, arguing that addressing an older person in parental terms reflects values that should not be lost in modern society.
“Respect is a value that should never fade in our society. When I meet someone whose children are my agemates, I naturally choose to address them with the same respect I would give to a parent. Age comes with wisdom, experience, and lessons that guide the younger generation,” Babu said.
His explanation follows a storm of criticism on social media, where detractors accused him of political capitulation and questioned his recent proximity to Gachagua.
Biblical Analogy to Critics
In a lengthy rebuttal, the MP invoked the Biblical story of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to Canaan, comparing his critics to followers who lost faith despite witnessing signs of deliverance.
He recalled how, according to scripture, the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, a defining miracle, yet later turned to idol worship when Moses ascended Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments. He further noted that some even demanded to return to Egypt, citing its abundance of food such as onions and cucumbers.
Babu said the lesson underscores the danger of losing sight of a larger mission due to short-term frustrations.
“The journey to Canaan is real, and we will get there willingly or unwillingly. What matters is that we arrive,” he said, adding that Kenyans should focus on long-term transformation rather than “small distractions.”
Political Undercurrents
The controversy comes amid shifting political perceptions surrounding the outspoken legislator. Babu has increasingly been viewed as aligning himself with Gachagua, who fell out with President William Ruto before his eventual impeachment.
Despite maintaining a strong anti-government stance, Babu has continued to articulate a vision of leading the Luo community toward a metaphorical “Canaan,” a political ideal long associated with the late opposition figure Raila Odinga.
He urged supporters to remain focused on that vision, warning that internal divisions could derail progress.
“Do not let minor issues distract us from the mission and vision,” he said.
The debate has reignited broader conversations about respect, political loyalty, generational dynamics, and the evolving alliances shaping Kenya’s opposition landscape.
