Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams dominated the stage at the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards gala in Morocco on Monday night, celebrating a historic evening for African football.

Williams, the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, made headlines as the night’s only double award winner, clinching Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year and Men’s Interclub Player of the Year honors.

Ademola Lookman, the Atalanta forward, was crowned CAF Men’s Player of the Year, succeeding fellow Nigerian Victor Osimhen and marking back-to-back victories for Nigeria in the coveted category—a feat last achieved in the 1990s by Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba.

Lookman’s stellar year includes a Europa League win, a hat-trick in the final, and recognition in multiple “Team of the Year” lineups, solidifying his place among Africa’s footballing elite.

On the women’s front, Zambia’s Barbra Banda earned the CAF Women Player of the Year title after a groundbreaking season with Orlando Pride and her inclusion in the FIFPRO Women’s World 11, a first for an African player.

Other winners included Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie, who retained the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year title, and Morocco’s Sanaâ Mssoudy, recognized as Women’s Interclub Player of the Year.

The gala also celebrated emerging talents like Senegal’s Lamine Camara and Morocco’s Doha El Madani, named Men’s and Women’s Young Players of the Year, respectively, alongside coaching legends like Ivory Coast’s Emerse Fae and Morocco’s Lamia Boumehdi.
