Police have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of 23-year-old Sospeter Onyango Osunga, popularly known as ‘Akoko Billionaire’ or ‘Akoko Sirkal,‘ who was killed in Nairobi’s Kibra area on November 12, 2024.
Akoko, a fourth-year student at Kirinyaga University and a renowned forex trader, met his tragic end after being attacked by a mob at a nightclub. The suspect, identified as Brian Otieno Maurice, is now in custody, with investigations linking him to the fatal stabbing that claimed Akoko’s life and left his two friends severely injured.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Akoko was assaulted by a gang in the Ayani area, sustaining fatal back wounds inflicted by a sharp object.
“Following thorough investigations, three individuals were initially arrested and provided crucial information, which, combined with other intelligence leads, led to the apprehension of the main suspect, who is set to be arraigned in court today,” the DCI said in a statement.
The Mohamed Amin-led agency also urged the public to maintain peace during the festive season, discouraging acts of violence that could lead to unnecessary loss of life.
During Akoko’s burial in Yimbo, Siaya County, his grieving grandfather cursed the perpetrators, declaring that justice would prevail.
“My grandson’s killers will know no peace. They will not survive,” he vowed.
Akoko, admired for his entrepreneurial success and flamboyant lifestyle, had become a household name in forex trading circles. Despite his young age, he amassed significant wealth, including building a palatial rural home in Yimbo, Siaya County.
The tragedy has left the nation mourning the loss of a bright and promising young entrepreneur.
