A 19-year-old student from Kakola village in Ahero, Nyando Sub-county, is on the verge of losing her dream to study Public Health at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) due to lack of school fees.

Flavian Achieng, who sat for her KCSE exams in 2024 at Sochoi Girls High School in Nandi County and scored an impressive grade A-, has expressed fears that her ambitions to become a public health doctor may be shattered if she fails to raise the required tuition fees before September 1, when admission is set to begin.

“I come from Ahero Kakola. I did my KCSE last year at Sochoi Girls in Nandi County, I got an A- and was called to JKUAT to pursue a Public Health course. But where I come from, my family is poor and cannot manage to raise my school fees,” Achieng told The Kenyan Tabloid on Thursday.

The bright student said her efforts to seek support through the offices of Kisumu Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda and Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga have not borne fruit. She is now appealing to leaders, including Nyando MP Jared Okelo, Ahero Ward MCA Ken Ooko, and Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, as well as well-wishers, to come to her aid.

Her mother, Maureen Akoth Aluso, echoed her plea, saying she is unable to support her daughter’s education as she relies on peasant farming and menial jobs to provide food for the family.

“My daughter Flavian Achieng Aluso scored an A- in KCSE last year. I am unable to take her to university, so I am requesting any well-wisher to help me support her dream. I will really appreciate,” said Aluso, who provided her contact as 0716 774 454.

Achieng’s story underscores the plight of many bright but needy students in rural areas in the country whose dreams risk being cut short due to financial hardship.
